Proteins are made up of amino acids and are essentially the building blocks of the human body. But, just about how much protein do we really need? The answer to this question could be determined by using a simple formula which I have added near the end of this article. Before you find out how much protein you actually need, it’s important to understand a little about the science of protein.
Our bodies require amino acids in order to properly grow. There are two types of amino acids that you should know about, essential amino acids and non-essential amino acids. Together there are a total of 20 amino acids. 12 of the amino acids fall into the non-essential amino acids category and those are actually produced in the body. The remaining 8 amino acids fall into the essential amino acids, and are generally supplied by the foods and drinks we consume daily.
It’s important to understand that not everything you eat necessary contains all 8 of the essential amino acids. Only proteins often referred to as complete proteins contain all the essential amino acids. Complete proteins are foods such as eggs, milk, fish, chicken, etc. However most other foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds and nuts are incomplete proteins. This means they do not contain all the essential amino acid. If you are a vegetarian, it’s very important that you mix up your diet and include different foods in order to get all the essential amino acids which your body needs to grow.
Now that we understand some of the general science behind proteins, we can start looking at how much of this stuff we really need. The simple truth is that there is no magic number, in other words it’s different for everyone. The amount you need is determined by several factors such as age, weight, activity level, and gender.
The truth is that most of us already have plenty of protein in our diets. The problem is that protein supplement manufacturers try to convince consumers that they need more than they really do. The reason why these companies do this is pretty obvious, they want more money! So understanding how much protein you need is very important to maintain good health, and save a ton of money. When you eat an excessive amount of protein, what the body will do is actually convert the protein into fat, so yes there is a negative side to consuming too much protein.
Here is one simple formula to calculate how much protein your body needs
Using Pounds: (Weight/2.2) x Activity Level = Amount of Protein You Need
Using Kilograms: Weight x Activity Level = Amount of Protein You Need
Simply input your weight into one of the formulas, depending on which measuring unit you would like to use (pounds or kilograms). Next, choose an activity level between (0.8 and 2.0) and plug it into the formula where it says “Activity Level”. Those who are recovering from an injury or illness, are pregnant, or exercise frequently need to put in a high activity level. Those trying to build muscle and are lifting weights should essential put in an activity level of 2.0.
After you input all the numbers, solve the simple equation and you will get a number which is the grams of protein recommended.
Please understand that the results are not 100% accurate. There is no formula that I know of that will give you 100% accurate results. However, this is a very simple and easy way to find out how much protein you should be consuming!
